5 Great Reasons Kids Should try Taekwondo
Grand Master Edmund Ciarfella
5 Great Reasons Kids should try Taekwondo
Not every child is cut out for teamsports, and not every parent has a desire for their child to run up and
down a field or court.
So where can one encourage their child to
get healthy exercise while learning discipline, respect, and
self-confidence? Try the mat.
As co-ed sport, Taekwondo is a great alternative for children that do not have a passion to play. Here are five reasons why:
1. Strengthens both mind and body
The kicking, blocking, striking and
punching moves in Taekwondo make kids stronger, with better balance,
flexibility and coordination. Memorizing long movement sequences
requires focus and concentration. As kids condition their bodies and get
fit, their minds get sharper too.
2. Develops discipline and respect
Taekwondo students learn both physical
and mental discipline and are expected to show respect to their
instructor, fellow students and themselves. The self-discipline and
self-restraint learned from practicing taekwondo may carry over into
other areas of the child's life, and could even help them to resist peer
pressure.
3. Teaches self-defense skills
As children learn skills in Taekwondo for
self-protection, they will be better prepared when coming across
bullies or more aggressive peers. Studies have shown that boys who
participate in martial arts have reduced aggression (which means they’re
less likely to become bullies themselves).
4. Helps kids set goals and accomplish them
Learning how to set and achieve short and
long-term goals is where the belt system really comes into play. As
kids advance up a level and achieve a new colored belt, they are working
towards a bigger goal, earning a black belt. Once they achieve their
long-term goal, they realize all the work, determination and
perseverance that went into achieving this, which carries over into
everything else they do.
5. Builds confidence and self-esteem
As kids get stronger and more skilled,
their confidence increases. The positive and encouraging attitude from
their instructors will (hopefully!) rub off on them. When striving for a
new goal, such as earning a more advanced belt, students master skills
by memorizing long movement sequences and making their movements sharper
and stronger. As they achieve their goals, they learn that they can
accomplish what they set out to do, which builds higher self-esteem. A
lesson, we can all learn from.
