5 Great Reasons Kids Should try Taekwondo

Grand Master Edmund Ciarfella

5 Great Reasons Kids should try Taekwondo

Not every child is cut out for team
sports, and not every parent has a desire for their child to run up and
down a field or court.

So where can one encourage their child to
get healthy exercise while learning discipline, respect, and
self-confidence? Try the mat.

As co-ed sport, Taekwondo is a great alternative for children that do not have a passion to play. Here are five reasons why:

1. Strengthens both mind and body

The kicking, blocking, striking and
punching moves in Taekwondo make kids stronger, with better balance,
flexibility and coordination. Memorizing long movement sequences
requires focus and concentration. As kids condition their bodies and get
fit, their minds get sharper too.

2. Develops discipline and respect

Taekwondo students learn both physical
and mental discipline and are expected to show respect to their
instructor, fellow students and themselves. The self-discipline and
self-restraint learned from practicing taekwondo may carry over into
other areas of the child's life, and could even help them to resist peer
pressure.

3. Teaches self-defense skills

As children learn skills in Taekwondo for
self-protection, they will be better prepared when coming across
bullies or more aggressive peers. Studies have shown that boys who
participate in martial arts have reduced aggression (which means they’re
less likely to become bullies themselves).

4. Helps kids set goals and accomplish them

Learning how to set and achieve short and
long-term goals is where the belt system really comes into play. As
kids advance up a level and achieve a new colored belt, they are working
towards a bigger goal, earning a black belt. Once they achieve their
long-term goal, they realize all the work, determination and
perseverance that went into achieving this, which carries over into
everything else they do.

5. Builds confidence and self-esteem

As kids get stronger and more skilled,
their confidence increases. The positive and encouraging attitude from
their instructors will (hopefully!) rub off on them. When striving for a
new goal, such as earning a more advanced belt, students master skills
by memorizing long movement sequences and making their movements sharper
and stronger. As they achieve their goals, they learn that they can
accomplish what they set out to do, which builds higher self-esteem. A
lesson, we can all learn from.

Heroin in our Community

Heroin in our Community

If you
have not heard another young person (25 years old) from Warwick overdosed and
died from heroin this past week.  I can
tell you that research shows death’s from heroin overdoses increasing
exponentially over that past 3 years.

Having
had literally thousands of children come through our doors at United Martial
Arts Centers over the past 22 years my wife and I have had the opportunity to
meet and get to know these children very well and we care about their
wellbeing.

My wife
and I are very concerned about the direction our society is taking with the
increased acceptance among our youth with the use of drugs such as heroin.

That
being said having your child involved in a program that helps them develop an “IDENTITY”
that is powerful enough for them to say to themselves “I am a Black Belt and
Black Belts don’t use drugs” can  save
their lives but also deter their experimenting with drugs.  Also being surrounded with Instructors who
are positive role models at a martial arts school gives kids mentors to look up
to.

For
parent whose children already train with United Martial Arts Centers if you
start to get push back about coming to class and continuing training BEWARE…this
could be a RED Flag.  We often see this
occur at about 12-13 year old.  This is
also the time when most children begin experimenting with drugs.   The key is keeping your child involved in an
activity that promoted health and wellness.

The
article below is from CNN -

Many more people are dying from
heroin overdoses than in previous years, according to the latest available
statistics from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An analysis of those numbers and what might be responsible
for the uptick in heroin deaths appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine
on Wednesday.

By the time students in the US reach the
eighth grade, one in five will have used inhalants. In 2007, inhalants were the
substance most frequently abused by youth aged 12 or 13.

In
general, drug overdose deaths have been on the rise for the past two decades,
but the number of deaths from heroin use is up by 39%.

That
means 5,927 people died after using heroin in 2012 and that number jumped to
8,260 deaths in 2013
.
Those are the latest numbers
available.

This
is the third year in a row that heroin deaths have increased.

The silver lining, if there is such
a thing in a report about drug fatalities, is that deaths from prescription
drug abuse have remained fairly stable from 2011-2013; that's after those deaths
peaked in 2010.

For
perspective: The number of people dying after abusing drugs is higher than the
number of people killed in traffic accidents.
