How UMAC Has Changed My Life

Senior
Instructor Robert Kimmins
How
UMAC Has Changed My Life

My
training as a student of the United Martial Arts Centers has made an
incomparable impact on my life. To keep the list brief, my training has given
me lifelong friends, a respect for & dedication to my health, and an
entirely unique outlook on life. With these and more benefits, I look forward
to what is in store as I continue my lifelong Tae Kwon Do journey.
As
a student of UMAC, I have been given the wonderful opportunity to train with a
countless amount of training partners. As is the case in any martial art, many
students have stopped their training during my tenure. From when I started
training eleven years ago to the present, there is only
one other student still training from when I was a White Belt. It is a unique
bond that is formed with old training partners, such that some of my old
training partners are now some of my closest friends for life. In UMAC,
however, you develop a one-of-a-kind friendship with your fellow students- a
comradery, the kind where you get excited when you see that a certain someone
or two will be taking that same class with you. I am grateful to have that
comradery with such a great number of fellow students.
Through
my leadership training, I have learned a great deal about the importance of
one’s health. An average person not training in Tae Kwon Do will have a general
understanding that it is important to stay healthy by being active and eating
healthy. That which I have learned at UMAC has expanded upon this principle. I
have been given the tools for creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I
once took a seminar with Master Paul Melella in which he explained the most
important values in his life. To my surprise, he said his #1 was his health.
And he explained why- without his health, how can he be the best husband,
father, Master, business owner, etc. that he can be? This was profound for me,
just a 17 year-old kid. Without Grand Master Ciarfella and Master Bender, I
would not have learned the importance of green tea and proper diet. Nor would I
have my Tae Kwon Do-centered outlook on life.
Through
UMAC I have learned that Tae Kwon Do is more than kicking and punching. To be a
true Tae Kwon Do martial artist, one must train mentally just as one does physically.
Not only must you develop an understanding for the Five Tenets of Tae Kwon Do,
you must also adopt them into your character. In addition to this, something
uniquely UMAC I have incorporated into my life is optimism. Through Grand
Master Ciarfella, I have learned that optimism can give you more peaceful mind,
a goal that Grand Master Kim has for all of us. It can be used from the
smallest difficulties, like having a challenge learning a new form or kick, to
the bigger life challenges, such as losing a job or a family member.
With
all I have learned, I am grateful & appreciative for how my life will be
lead in a more positive direction guided by the life lessons I have experienced
in UMAC.

10 Life Savings Self Defense Tips

Top 10 Women’s Self Defense Tips
Grand Master Edmund Ciarfella’s
United Martial Arts Centers

1. Look where you're going. Check out the gas station, ATM, 7-Eleven
etc. before you pull up/go in so you don't become part of a stickup in
progress.

2. Wake up. Turn off your iPod/iPhone etc. when out in public. Don't jog with earphones.

3. Maintain a Personal Comfort Zone. No stranger or hostile relation is
allowed to get closer than 3 feet to you without vetting or permission.

4. Walk wide around building corners. Don't get jumped.

5. React. Practice a high speed flinch response in the event you're surprised by a sound, movement or touch

6. Watch your drink. Someone could slip a knock out drug in your cocktail.

7. No stranger gets in your house. Ever. Even if it's a little girl
screaming to use your phone to call her daddy because her mommy's lying
in the road bleeding to death. Call 911 for her. Otherwise, you open the
door and 3 mutants rush in and a horrific home invasion begins.

8. Flat tire in a bad neighborhood? Drive on your rims. New wheels are a small price to pay for avoiding a violent car jacking.

9. People give you a bad feeling as you walk down a street? Do you:
Make eye contact? Don't make eye contact? Look assertive? Reach for your
gun? Walk down a different street.

10. You're being mugged for
your money. Don't fish around in your purse/wallet for bills. Be
cooperative. Give them your whole wallet (prepare a separate "mugging"
wallet.

United Martial Arts Centers Top 10 Sparring Tips

TOP 10 SPARRING TIPS

1. Start sparring early in your taekwondo journey

taekwondo sparring tips,taekwondo sparring,taekwondo
Start taekwondo sparring classes as soon as your instructor says you're ready.
It might seem daunting...

...but as a white or yellow belt - no-one expects anything of you!
And in a good martial arts school the instructor will not let anyone bully or over-power you.

At United Martial Arts Centers we teach our students to use only 30% power and to

ONLY use techniques that are equivalent to the rank level you are sparring against.

Example:  when sparring a white belt, even if you are a Black Belt, you only use front kick, round house kick and punches.

The goal is to help you learn not feed our egos by showing off.

A good taekwondo instructor will put you against someone who will take care of you- very possibly a taekwondo black belt.

A good teacher will then increase the pressure slowly as you show you can handle it.

2. Understand that fear is normal - and don't let it stand in your way
Do top taekwondo competitors feel scared before a bout?...
...of course they do!

Everyone
feels fear in taekwondo sparring. It's very intimidating to go into a
ring and face someone intent on kicking and punching you.
The answer...

...is
to decide that you will not let your fear beat you. Force yourself to
get into the ring and do your best. In reality it never seems to be as
bad as you think it's going to be.

And when you conquer your fear...
...you feel fantastic!

3. Footwork footwork footwork
If you remember only one of our taekwondo sparring tips remember what Mohammed Ali said
'float like a butterfly sting like a bee'
In taekwondo sparring (like in boxing) footwork really is the key.

It's
hard to believe... but in taekwondo sparring what happens between your
kicks is actually more important than kicks themselves.

Learn to slide forwards and backwards keeping your weight on both feet and your body over your legs.
Learn to switch quickly on the spot.

Learn to step forwards and backwards quickly and accurately.

And learn to move sideways in a balanced way.

So another of our great taekwondo sparring tips is... take your time, listen hard when your instructor teaches you footwork.

Practise it. And pay attention to every tiny detail.
It will pay off!

4. Start to understand your kicking distance
taekwondo sparring tips,taekwondo sparring,taekwondo
When beginners start tkd sparring they often kick in front of the opponent- their kicks don't reach the target.

One of our top taekwondo sparring tips is that you need to start to understand your kicking distance.

Start
to learn where you can reach with a turning kick- and don't kick until
you are at the right distance to make the point score.

Too close or too far out and you miss and waste effort.

You have to use your footwork to get the distance just right.

You
also need to look at your opponent. Are they taller or shorter than
you? If they're shorter keep them out and take advantage of your long
legs.

And if they're taller than you - you need to rely on your
speed and footwork. Move inside their kicking range. Score. And get out
again.

5.Think about ways to relax your body
Taekwondo
sparring is frantic and busy. Your brain has to cope with multiple
signals and stresses and it's easy to get overwhelmed and panic.

This is usually when the mistakes happen and you lose the bout.

So one of our top taekwondo sparring tips is something you can do outside the dojang...
...take some time to think about how you can best calm your mind.

Maybe
taking a deep but short breath in then a long breath out while you
shake your shoulders will work for you. Or perhaps you can smile inside
and shake your legs.

Practise this outside the ring.

And then next time you are sparring and you feel the pressure mount...

...skip
away from your opponent and watch them carefully while you calm
yourself down. Then go re-engage in the bout with a clear head.

6. Train hard... fight easy
taekwondo sparring tips,taekwondo sparring,taekwondo
Here's one of our top taekwondo sparring tips.

To be successful in taekwondo sparring you need to be fit.

Really fit!

To get fighting fit you need to do combinations of lots of different exercises to get all round body fitness.

You need to do endurance distance running as well as hill sprints and interval training.

This develops your overall fitness AND your ability to cope with short bursts of intense exercise.

You
also need to do strength training combined with ballistic exercises
like jumping and clapping push-ups. These exercises develop strength and
speed in your legs and arms.

And you need to stretch so that you are supple enough to kick high.

7. Control Your Emotions
taekwondo sparring tips,taekwondo sparring,taekwondo
It's really common for beginner taekwondo students to get really angry when someone scores a point against them.

The anger is like a red mist. They rush back in to try and get even. And they get caught again!

So if you feel yourself getting angry...  control it.

Shake it off.

Realize that everyone has points scored against them - it's part of the game.

Calm your mind.

Get your head into the present.

And work out how you're going to win the next point.

8.Compete as soon as you can
And if you get a chance to compete in a UMAC sparring competition?...
...take it.

And
take it as early as you can in your taekwondo journey. As long as your
instructor is happy- compete as a white belt! If you lose?...
...so what?

There was never any expectation you would win. You're a taekwondo white belt!

A good instructor will not put you in danger. And competing is a fantastic experience. You get to meet other taekwondo players.

You get to see what other people achieve. And you get to face and come through a tough challenge.

This one of our best taekwondo sparring tips for your personal growth as a martial artist.

9.take care of your injuries
In tkd sparring you will take the inevitable knock.
It goes with the territory!

Our commonest injury is the elbow to the top of the foot. Not nice!

One of our top taekwondo sparring tips is...
...take care of your injuries.

Rest. Ice. Compress. Elevate. Let your injuries heal.

Then come back stronger!

10.Keep on keeping on
And in the end the best thing you can do...
...is get to class.
Get to every sparring class you can.  Get yourself there and keep training.
Because it keeps you going

3 Reasons to Keep a Summer Schedule for your child

Grand Master Edmund Ciarfella

Why Keep a Summer Schedule

Keeping Kids on a Summer Schedule…3 Best Reasons why is it important

Summer break is a time to just let loose and be free to explore. Without
the rigid structure of the school day, minds have the opportunity to
expand and find their own way. But sleeping until noon isn’t helpful to
anyone, and getting out of the summer cycle doesn’t have to be as
painful as you think. The key is to empower your children to see the
possibilities that this time has to offer them!

Here are three reasons to keep your kids on a summer schedule, then some tips on how to make it happen.

1.   Reason #1 – Reality

This is the absolute number 1 reason to keep your kids on a summer
schedule – reality. When kids are in their school years, we teach them
that there’s this magical three month space where you get to sleep all
day and play video games. Then when they get older, they’re hit with the
reality that life just isn’t like that. Most people get two weeks of
vacation per year, that’s it! Of course we want to let kids be kids, and
we certainly don’t want to ruin the magic of childhood by pushing them
all of the time. But realize that humans are creatures of habit, and
when parents allow their children to just go on without any structure at
all, they’re instilling a cycle that their children will really have a
hard time breaking when they’re older.

2.   Reason #2 – Growth

There is something immensely satisfying to kids as well as to adults
about accomplishing something. Success breeds pride and self confidence.
Setting a summer schedule means that your kids get to feel the
satisfaction that comes from being productive and engaged in the world
around them. While kids as they get older naturally need to sleep a
little later to be healthy – that doesn’t mean staying in bed until
11am. Our minds are at their peak in the morning, not at midnight.
Summer affords the opportunity for kids to learn about things that there
isn’t time for during the school year, particularly physical activities
like martial arts. Those are all more likely to happen before noon than
later in the day when it’s too hot or too dark.

3.   Reason #3 – Preparation

Staying up late regularly and sleeping late regularly are a recipe for a
tough transition back to school and to the rush of afterschool
activities that come in the fall. Maintaining a summer schedule will
allow your child to have an easy time getting back into the swing of
things. Make it easy for your child! Give them a break by getting them
up early.

Painless Summer Scheduling

This doesn’t have to be that difficult. It sounds horrible, even painful
to most parents. It’s really not! And even if the summer is already
going, you can still get started with a summer schedule, for all of the
great reasons listed above.

Here are some tips:

  • Be open about the reasons it’s important

  • Get your kids input – empower them to want to wake up

  • Let them set their own alarm – don’t wake them up every day

  • Allow the occasional late night and late morning, but limit it to weekends

  • Set everything a little later (ie, 8:00am wake up instead of 6:30am)

  • Leave plenty of free time, unstructured but not necessarily screen time

  • Include daily training/physical activity in the schedule

  • Don’t watch the clock, allow for some flexibility

  • Be sure to include activities like your child’s United Martial Arts Centers classes in your schedule

  • When you get frustrated, remember how much this will serve them when
they’re in college or adults, and have a habit of getting themselves up
    and being productive!

5 Great Reasons Kids Should try Taekwondo

Grand Master Edmund Ciarfella

5 Great Reasons Kids should try Taekwondo

Not every child is cut out for team
sports, and not every parent has a desire for their child to run up and
down a field or court.

So where can one encourage their child to
get healthy exercise while learning discipline, respect, and
self-confidence? Try the mat.

As co-ed sport, Taekwondo is a great alternative for children that do not have a passion to play. Here are five reasons why:

1. Strengthens both mind and body

The kicking, blocking, striking and
punching moves in Taekwondo make kids stronger, with better balance,
flexibility and coordination. Memorizing long movement sequences
requires focus and concentration. As kids condition their bodies and get
fit, their minds get sharper too.

2. Develops discipline and respect

Taekwondo students learn both physical
and mental discipline and are expected to show respect to their
instructor, fellow students and themselves. The self-discipline and
self-restraint learned from practicing taekwondo may carry over into
other areas of the child's life, and could even help them to resist peer
pressure.

3. Teaches self-defense skills

As children learn skills in Taekwondo for
self-protection, they will be better prepared when coming across
bullies or more aggressive peers. Studies have shown that boys who
participate in martial arts have reduced aggression (which means they’re
less likely to become bullies themselves).

4. Helps kids set goals and accomplish them

Learning how to set and achieve short and
long-term goals is where the belt system really comes into play. As
kids advance up a level and achieve a new colored belt, they are working
towards a bigger goal, earning a black belt. Once they achieve their
long-term goal, they realize all the work, determination and
perseverance that went into achieving this, which carries over into
everything else they do.

5. Builds confidence and self-esteem

As kids get stronger and more skilled,
their confidence increases. The positive and encouraging attitude from
their instructors will (hopefully!) rub off on them. When striving for a
new goal, such as earning a more advanced belt, students master skills
by memorizing long movement sequences and making their movements sharper
and stronger. As they achieve their goals, they learn that they can
accomplish what they set out to do, which builds higher self-esteem. A
lesson, we can all learn from.
